League of Women Voters
Welcome to another Spotlight 365, the Mt. Pleasant Area Chamber of Commerce’s newest digital initiative to shine a spotlight on the stories of our membership. Today, we are sharing the story of League of Women Voters!
The League of Women Voters was founded in 1920, very close to the passage of the 19th amendment. The founders anticipated that newly enfranchised voters would need ready access to information required to make informed decisions at the ballot box. The League of Women Voters Mt. Pleasant Area (LWVMPA) was founded in 1970 by a group of civic minded women who wanted to bring the resources the League offered to Mt. Pleasant and the surrounding area.
The League is a nonpartisan organization whose mission is to empower voters and defend democracy. The League provides up to date, unbiased information about voting laws, the voting process, and important voting dates in the City of Mt. Pleasant and Isabella County. Additionally, the League creates and distributes Voter Guides, conducts Candidates Forums and organizes Candidate Meet & Greets.
In addition to educating voters, the League's Observer Corps members attend and report on local commission and board meetings. The League also advocates for issues on which the organization has adopted formal positions on.
