Michigan's Smoke Free Law: Quick Guide for Business Owners

In an effort to provide ongoing business education, the Mt. Pleasant Area Chamber of Commerce is partnering with Central Michigan District Health Department to bring you the latest updates on the new Smoke Free Law in Michigan.  This law will take effect on May 1, 2010 and prohibits smoking in most public places.  Under this law all worksites in Michigan including bars and restaurants must be smoke free.  It also includes no smoking on patios, decks and is prohibited in enclosed areas of hotels, motels, and inns.

This law was enacted by the Michigan legislature based on formal findings stating that second smoke "has proven to cause cancer, heart disease, and asthma attacks in both smokers and non-smokers." The new law requires compliance in  the following ways:

- Discuss the new law with your employees
- Train employees in the new law

  As of May 1, 2010

- Post no Smoking Signs throughout the establishment
- Remove indoor ashtrays and other paraphernalia
- Direct any person who is smoking top extinguish the cigarette, cigar or other lighted tobacco item
